BBDC Office Closure
To help stop the spread of COVID-19, the Banting & Best Diabetes Centre offices at 200 Elizabeth Street are closed until further notice. However, BBDC staff are working remotely from home and can be reached by email.

Virtual Seminar Series at City-wide Endocrine Rounds

The BBDC will be hosting virtual seminars on Zoom beginning Friday, September 11 with Dr. Christopher Newgard who will kick off the 2020/21 City-wide Endocrine Rounds season to deliver the BBDC’s 2020 Charles Hollenberg Memorial Lectureship. Dr. Richard Lehner from the University of Alberta will be speaking on Friday, October 16.  All seminars will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. Zoom meeting links will be sent out to those on our mailing list, and information will be added to our website as it becomes available.

Archie Sopman Awards Competition Is Back On With a Few Changes

The 2020 Archie Sopman Awards competition, which was cancelled in March, is back on with a few changes. The award will now provide funding for individuals to participate in a virtual diabetes-specific conference occurring in 2020 such as the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions to be held in June 2020. We are happy to announce that the award will now also provide funding for continuing education in diabetes. For complete award details and application instructions, please see our website.

BBDC to Restart Trainee Lab Seminar Series

We are delighted to announce that the BBDC will be we restarting the Trainee Lab Seminars that was cancelled earlier this spring due to COVID-19.  The seminars will be held via Zoom and our first seminar is scheduled for Friday, May 29 from 12 to 1 pm.  Additional seminars will held in late June.  Zoom meeting links will be sent out to all on our mailing list a couple of weeks before each seminar.  Please see the Trainee Lab Seminar schedule for details.

2020 Charles Hollenberg Summer Studentship Program Cancelled

The Government of Ontario has extended the Province-wide declaration of emergency to stop the spread of COVID-19 for at least another two weeks. Unfortunately, COVID-19 cases continue to rise, and the situation is not likely to improve in the near future. As a result, the Banting & Best Diabetes Centre has decided to cancel the 2020 Charles Hollenberg Summer Studentship program.

2020/2021 Graduate Studentship Competition
March 19, 2020
We will continue to hold a 2020/2021 BBDC Graduate Studentships competition. Applications will only be accepted by email.  Do not deliver applications to our office. Please email your application, transcript, and OSOTF Financial Needs Assessment form to diabetes.bbdc@utoronto.ca.  If possible, email items as 1 PDF document.  Limit the file size to 10 MB and do not add security features to the PDF document such as password protection. Since it may be difficult for students to obtain official transcripts at this time, we will accept unofficial copies (e.g. screen shots or copies printed from the post-secondary institution’s website). Digital signatures on page 9 of the application form are also acceptable. See the revised application form for complete instructions.
